HONG KONG — CNN has completed the first edition of CNN Academy in Japan, bringing an intensive journalism and multimedia training program to Tokyo as the organization expands its efforts to prepare emerging storytellers for an increasingly digital and AI-driven media environment.

The Japan program combined online learning with an intensive, five-day workshop designed to give participants practical experience in producing journalism for multiple platforms.

The curriculum placed particular emphasis on digital storytelling and the evolving role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in news production.

Participants began with virtual coursework through CNN’s dedicated e-learning platform, exploring subjects including journalism ethics, digital storytelling and the responsible use of AI in newsroom environments.

The online component was followed by an immersive workshop in Tokyo, where participants applied the concepts through practical exercises and collaborative projects.

Five Days of Hands-On Journalism Training

The in-person portion of the program was hosted at Sophia University in Tokyo.

Participants worked with CNN international correspondent Hanako Montgomery, CNN producer Junko Ogura, mobile storytelling specialist Glen Mulcahy, and media executive David Ford.

The instructors brought experience spanning international reporting, production, mobile journalism and media leadership to the program.

During the five-day workshop, participants took part in interactive sessions and masterclasses covering areas such as:

  • Mobile journalism
  • Scriptwriting
  • Digital-first storytelling
  • AI-supported newsroom workflows
  • Multiplatform content production
  • Journalism and storytelling ethics

The program was structured to simulate a modern digital newsroom, giving participants an opportunity to work under conditions that reflect the demands of contemporary multimedia journalism.

The training culminated in the production of polished multiplatform projects, allowing participants to demonstrate the skills developed throughout the week.

Preparing Storytellers for an AI-Driven Media Landscape

The expansion into Japan reflects the changing requirements facing journalists and media creators.

AI is increasingly becoming part of newsroom workflows, from research and production to content development and distribution. At the same time, journalists need to maintain editorial judgment, accuracy and ethical standards when incorporating new technologies.

CNN Academy’s hybrid model combines digital coursework with face-to-face instruction, giving participants access to both structured learning resources and experienced media professionals.

Strengthening Partnerships Through Education

CNN Academy was launched in 2020 and has since worked with educational, creative and media organizations to combine CNN’s international journalism experience with academic and professional learning environments.

The program’s global expansion includes a combination of online resources, digital courses, practical exercises and workshops led by experienced industry professionals.

The Japan edition was delivered with the support of Sophia University, providing a local academic setting for the five-day training program.
